If you’ve ever stood and watched a 3D printer working, it can almost look like the nozzle is simply drawing an object into existence.
But there’s actually quite a lot happening between the filament sitting on the spool and that finished model appearing on the build plate.
So, what is the nozzle actually doing?
It Starts With the Filament
Your filament begins on the spool as a long strand of plastic. On many hobby 3D printers, this will be 1.75 mm thick.
The extruder grips the filament and carefully pushes it towards the hotend.
It’s important to remember that the nozzle isn’t pulling filament from the spool. The extruder is controlling how much filament is being fed into the hotend.
Things Start Getting Hot
The filament then enters the hotend, where it is heated until it becomes soft enough to flow.
The exact temperature depends on the material you’re printing with. PLA, PETG, ABS and other materials all have different temperature requirements.
This is why simply choosing the correct filament type in your slicer matters.
Too cold and the plastic may struggle to flow or the layers might not bond properly.
Too hot and you can start getting problems such as excessive stringing, poor detail or messy prints.
Then We Reach the Nozzle
A very common nozzle size on a 3D printer is 0.4 mm.
But what does that actually mean?
It refers to the diameter of the opening at the end of the nozzle.
The extruder pushes softened plastic through this tiny opening, creating a controlled line of molten plastic.
Your printer then moves the nozzle along the path calculated by the slicer.
It’s basically drawing the model one line at a time.
The Printer Isn’t Printing an Object – It’s Printing Layers
This is probably the easiest way to understand 3D printing.
Imagine slicing an object into hundreds or even thousands of extremely thin horizontal pieces.
The printer makes the first layer.
Then it moves slightly higher.
It makes another layer.
Then another.
And another.
Each new layer bonds to the one underneath it until eventually those tiny layers become the finished object.
That’s also where the name 3D printing starts to make a lot more sense.
Why Is the First Layer So Important?
The nozzle’s first job is arguably its most important.
It needs to put down a good first layer that sticks properly to the build plate.
If that first layer doesn’t stick, everything being printed on top of it is already in trouble.
That’s why you’ll often hear people talking about cleaning their build plate, bed levelling and first-layer problems.
A 10-hour print can be ruined in the first few minutes if the foundation isn’t right.
What Happens When the Nozzle Needs to Move Somewhere Else?
The printer doesn’t always want plastic coming out.
When it needs to travel across the model without printing, the extruder can pull the filament backwards slightly. This is called retraction.
It helps reduce those annoying little strings of plastic you sometimes see between different parts of a print.
Once the nozzle reaches the next area, filament is pushed forwards again and printing continues.
This happens over and over throughout a print.
Does Nozzle Size Make a Difference?
Absolutely.
A smaller nozzle can be useful when you want very fine detail, although prints can take considerably longer.
A larger nozzle can push out more plastic at once, which can make larger objects much quicker to print, but you may sacrifice some fine detail.
The common 0.4 mm nozzle is popular because it’s a good balance between detail, speed and reliability for everyday printing.
So What’s Actually Happening When You Watch a Printer?
Next time you watch a 3D printer working, remember what’s going on.
The extruder is feeding filament.
The hotend is heating it.
The nozzle is controlling where that softened plastic goes.
The printer is following instructions created by the slicer.
And hundreds or thousands of individual lines are slowly being built into layers.
Those layers eventually become the object sitting on your build plate.
It looks like the nozzle is simply moving backwards and forwards.
In reality, you’re watching a digital 3D model being turned into a physical object — one tiny line of plastic at a time.
